Domestic observers

IN reply to a letter I sent and was kindly published in this newspaper on January 5 2018, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Rajesh Chandra, wrote (FT 09/01/18) that according to Section 154 of the Electoral Act, the Minister Responsible for Elections approves observers for the elections.

This reminds me that prior to 2014 General Election, Attorney-General Aiyaz Saiyed-Khaiyum, also then Minister Responsible for Elections, had said that domestic observers could be allowed and included in the next elections (2018). So we are looking forward to his approval.

Now on the front of the new 2018 Fiji telephone directory are the words , "2018 General Election, 'Lets Vote".

Again. we are assured of an election this year.

But the big question is whether it is going to be a transparent , free and fair election? Domestic observers have a place.

Election is not just about saying, "Lets Vote" nor about the date of election but how it is going to be free and fair so that people have their say.
