Fourth estate

I don't know what Colin Deoki is really talking about when he says "imagine if the media worked with the Government and the Government worked with the media" (FT 22/01).

The only place I can imagine that kind of "working together" is in authoritarian regimes.

In a democracy the media is meant to stand apart from and be independent of the government to fulfil its public duty as the fourth estate.

Otherwise I believe the media becomes nothing more than the mouthpiece for government propaganda.

I believe Colin has apparently not thought through the logical extension of what he is advocating.

He needs to educate himself on the meaning of a free and independent media.
