Uphill battle

Sevens coach Gareth Baber has rated the All Blacks and Blitzbokke as Fiji's biggest opponents in the WRSS. However, we can never underestimate the likes of Canada, which beat Fiji at the Cape Town 7s, USA, England, Samoa and Australia.

I know Baber has had an immense challenge in emulating Ryan's success and has become a target for ardent fans on social media with his winning record. Only one win since the Welshman took over.

Even the first leg saw the Fijians slump to the Boks twice.

In Cape Town we could have belted the Boks but a few controversial calls and lapse in defence saw Fiji throw the towel in the second half.

Baber may blame the relatively new squad but the former Hong Kong 7s mentor should know that a young and inexperienced Fiji 7s team had skinned the favourites in Hong Kong last year.

Newspaper headlines sang songs of how a sensational Fiji side won their third title in a row with the 22-0 mauling of South Africa.

Fiji was simply irresistible as the Blitzbokke were blown away.

Fiji had won their third HK 7s title in a row after a sensational display in the final against Africa and the Olympic champions won in a performance packed with their customary flair and power that simply blew the series leaders off the park.

We had unknown names in Kunavula, Nasoko, Labalaba, Bituniyata and Mocenacagi but we gave the Boks little room to attack.

Please Mr Baber, show the footage of that final to our warriors to motivate them as they prepare for Sydney and Hamilton.

Our boys need to be reminded that come game day they are capable of beating any side.

All they need is motivation.

All the best Mr Baber!
