Is this progress?

THE other day I went to a big hardware company in Suva to get some cement powder. These days they have it in tiny $2.50 packets unlike the bulk ones we would buy in bygone days.

With all the fancy computer screen commodity check-up, elaborate paper documentation and security checkup, I spent a good 20 minutes or so to finally get out with my lousy $10 purchase.

I remember as a child going to a small Chinese shop in Marks St in the 1960s where the Chinese shopowner had one of those ancient counting contraptions (abacus). Before you could say "bula, moce" he would process your items and you'd be out of the shop.

So what kind of progress have we made on the customer service front?
