Christmas message

Christmas indeed was a special time to enjoy with families and friends and spread goodwill, peace, harmony and good race relations.

At midnight fireworks lit the skies and signalled the dawn of a special day that Hindus call bada din (big day). People celebrated the birth of Lord Jesus Christ with much joy and anticipation.

At home, there was no exception for hope and for bright and sunny days as we head into 2018. Compared with our days, Christmas today has become an expensive affair as the price of goods has gone up and the toy guns, buses and dolls have been replaced by electronic gifts that kids are showered with and a lot more people are travelling to spend their vacation overseas.

Christmas has sadly become individualistic rather than the good old days where the extended family gathered.

Christmas Day was an opportune time to embrace the welcoming spirit of celebration and work together for a common cause and that is creating a better and harmonious Fiji.

I was reading the message by the President Jioji Konrote online and I loved these lines "Let us all come together in the spirit of the Christmas tradition to love one another and express our gratitude for the blessings we have received this past year, and for the strength to overcome whatever challenges we face".

The President further added: "Importantly, I ask that we strongly denounce any hatred shown against our brothers and sisters of other religions. I also ask that we strongly denounce all of society's ills, including violence against women, children and the vulnerable".

Thank you sir, for the powerful and vibrant message!

While we enjoyed Christmas and Boxing Day, let us acknowledge the provisions provided by the Good Lord.

To the police and LTA officers manning our roads, thank you so much for sacrificing your time. To those officers patrolling at night, thank you for your efforts in trying to make our streets safe at night!

To the hardworking staff members of The Fiji Times, thank you for your commitment and continue with the ethics of journalism.

This will take you far for you will gain people's respect and admiration. May we be blessed with peace, happiness and prosperity! Cheers Fiji as we count days to January 1st!

God bless Fiji!
