In a healthy relationship partners are equal which means that neither partner has the authority over the other. Each partner is free to live their own life, which can include deciding to share some aspects of their life with their partner.
Respect also means that, while we may not always agree with our partner, we choose to trust them and put faith in their judgment. This trust can be built over time as our relationship progress and we learn more about each other.
Respect in a relationship is reflected in how we treat each other on a daily basis. Even if we disagree or have an argument and even in healthy relationship we are able to respect and value each other's opinion and feelings by fighting fair.
Respect in a relationship is not about controlling our partner and making them do what we want to be done. Respect is actually about the freedom to be ourselves and to be loved for who we are.
In a healthy relationship, respect looks like:
q talking openly and honesty with
q patiently listening to each other;
q valuing each other's feelings and
q giving each other space;
q supporting each other's interests
hobbies, career, etc;
q building each other up; and
q honouring each other's boundaries,
no matter what.
While it's important to respect our partner in our relationship, it's also really important to have respect for ourselves.
Self respect is the key to building confidence and maintaining healthy relationship with other people throughout our life.
