Common arachnid

WITH reference to your article (FT15/6) on batibasaga (scorpions), I can assure you that they are not at all unusual in Fiji.

Although rarely found in urban areas, they are common in the bush and quite harmless.

The early missionaries had no trouble finding this out, and the word batibasaga appears in the Bible, and is also a personal name. Other words for scorpion in parts of Fiji are dabasaga and nevi.

For future reference, I suggest that your journalists refer to Na iVolavosa Vakaviti, Dick Watling's Mai Veikau and Paddy Ryan's Fiji's Natural Heritage, all of which are good sources of information on Fiji's flora and fauna.
