An aquarium

With Fiji co-hosting the Ocean Conference in New York, should there be reason for us having an aquarium back at home? Not all citizens get a chance to go out to sea and experience the reefs.

Therefore an aquarium would perhaps be an important chance to raise awareness and an appreciation of the beauty of our oceans as well as the organisms living there.

This could be an attraction for schoolchildren and tourists. Nadi and Suva are possible sites for hosting an aquarium. We have a strong basis for having aquarium with the support of the Ministry of Fisheries, University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, a number of environmental non-governmental organisations and other regional agencies having offices in Fiji.

If a Pacific Island national of Palau, could set up an aquarium what is stopping us from doing so? In the meantime, one appreciates the on-going efforts of local communities in establishing no fishing zones as recently indicated by the people of Rewa.
