THE idea of constructing a railway line in the Suva-Nausori corridor has been mooted once in the media.
It has been raised in the past several times, but because of pressure from bus companies and other vested interests the concept has been shelved.
However, in view of the ever escalating traffic congestion and the immense difficulties faced by commuters there seems to be no other options.
To a large degree bad planning and neglect of our national roads over a long period of time has caused this very unpleasant situation.
The Government saw fit to allow duty free Prius Hybrid vehicles so that dependence on imported motor fuel is reduced and subsequently saving millions of dollars in foreign exchange.
The idea was not bad, but no one had realised that hybrid vehicles will explode like balolo on our national roads. Thus making travelling so difficult and cumbersome.
Ask those commuters from Nausori to Suva what hell they go through every morning and evening after work. You are not likely to get a pleasant comment about traffic congestion or the conditions of our national roads. Potholes have become a national joke, so much so that even radio announcers make fun of it.
I am of the opinion that it is time that we seriously start thinking of having a network of railway lines between Suva and Nausori and later to be extended to Navua.
This should solve our traffic congestion problem because many people will prefer to take a train ride rather than having to drive on a congested road. This will be a realistic approach in view of the vibrant economic activities which Fiji is currently enjoying.
Funds for constructing the railway line can be sourced from overseas private investors or governments.
This bold decision needs to be taken now.Home | Top
