Border police

A lot has been said lately regarding the salary structure of civil servants including their contracts and the need for them to maintain high performances in their service and delivery.

In Parliament, the following words were uttered: "We need to create an environment that is conducive to productive work and excellence service delivery (FT 25/05)."

I am bringing this point up because after seeing the big and new changes in the almost complete Nadi International Airport building, my heart was saddened when I walked into the border police office, just on the right of the new departure area.

The small office had two office tables, an old fan because the aircondition system was not working and there were holes in the ceiling because the ceiling covers were removed. The light was dull and the room needed fresh paint to make it come alive and look new to match the new look Nadi International Airport at its side.

The border police officers who use that office were professional in their duties, despite their crappy looking office and I believe no one would dare ask for a better work environment, for obvious reasons.

Through this column, I am pleading with the Police Commissioner and the Government to please upgrade the border police office in Nadi airport and any other offices in Fiji that are in the same or worse condition.

If we are really serious in getting civil servants and government employees to perform at their highest level, then it is imperative that Government also provides a conducive work environment, as stated above.
