Kai Viti

UNLIKE other Pacific Islands which fought for their identities against their colonisers in the 19th and 20th centuries, Fiji, at least the Polynesian in us, did not.

Instead, through the Armed Native Constabulary, we helped subjugate our own kin, the strong and powerful hill tribes of Viti Levu who courageously fought for their indigenous rights, for their land and heritage were taken by the planters supported by the Government.

They are Kai Colo and proud of it. They detested being called Kai Viti (Nicole 2011).

Kai Viti, in the context of the past, referred to the late comers of the 17th century. And I believe political persistence that Kai Viti or Fijian is indigenous to the iTaukei is a blatant lie, if not ignorance.
