Hospital rules

Selwa Nandan, Lautoka | Tuesday, May 30, 2017
RECENTLY, my brother was admitted in a critical condition at the Lautoka Hospital.

My nephew who was with him in the ward called me if I could come immediately as his dad's condition had suddenly deteriorated and he was asking for me.

I rushed to the hospital only to be denied entry by the security personnel. All my pleas were to no avail. They remained adamant that I should wait until the normal visiting time which was an hour away. Even my request for them to call the staff in the ward to verify my claim was ignored.

It was only after about 20 minutes when my nephew came down to announce that his dad was no more that I was finally allowed to go in. But it was too late by then.

I do understand that there are rules that need to be followed but in such exigencies, the security personnel should be allowed to exercise their discretion on an ad hoc basis.

I believe more empathy should be shown in such cases towards the patients and their immediate families.
