Ministers' pay

IN RESPONSE to a question raised by students in regards to the salaries of ministers during the national budget consultations, the Minister for Economy and A-G Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum explained that corruption was more likely to occur if public officials were being paid less than what they deserved (FT 18/4).

I concur with him that they need to be adequately remunerated to reduce their vulnerability to corruption. But I don't think it is fair to compare ourselves with other developed countries like Australia, New Zealand and Singapore given the huge divergence between our economies.

Just as I believe it is not appropriate for the parliamentarians to decide how much they should be paid.
